The Best Trading Habit

Over the past few months, I've tried optimising my trading strategy in numerous ways. This is why everyone should record all of their data in some kind of journal. Anyway, I've also looked at any good habits I could learn in order to improve my trading. In this blog post, I'm going to explain how to incorporate and execute one of the most important ones, waking up early. Let me just say before we begin, don't be spooked. Have an open mind because this information honestly made such a difference in my trading.

So, before I started waking up early, I used to wake up at around 6:45am to have enough time to have breakfast and get ready to leave the house by 7:30am. This meant that the only time I could really focus on the market was in the evening when I came home around 6pm. In the evening, I had missed all the moves during the day and if I placed a trade, I would have to hold it during the unpredictable Tokyo sessions. I was able to look at the market just once a day, which I can assure you is not enough.

So I developed the habit of getting up earlier in order to look at the markets and get any other creative work done. I now wake up at 4:00am, have a 20m morning routine and then go straight into working. I could go more into detail about why it's better to do creative work in the morning, but I will save that for another blog post as I believe it's a big subject. Ever since, I've started using this strategy, I've improved my results over double, both in the markets and in my other projects.

You may think 4:00am is too early for you, but I need around 3h in the morning to work. If you need to leave the house by 8am, for example, get up at 5:00am instead; this will ensure that you will have around 2 hours to work and then an hour or so to get ready to leave. Of course, since you are waking earlier, you need to consider also going to bed earlier, otherwise this cannot be sustainable. I sleep 7h every night and this is how much I need to function. If you want to reduce the number of hours you sleep, I would look into increasing the quality of your sleep or possibly experimenting with the ketogenic diet.

I would recommend just trying this out for 2 weeks or so, just to see what you think of it. Don't go straight into waking up early because you will most likely feel like a zombie for the rest of the day. Instead, progressively go to bed 30m earlier and wake 30m earlier each day until you reach an agreeable time. Good luck!
